Reed was asked what he wanted to be when he was a kid, to which he replied he wanted to be a professional athlete, but his high school coach got him into the coaching side of sports. He was always playing sports, but he was also a nerd who strived to please others and set high standards for himself. He transitioned from an athlete to a coach, and now he enjoys working with both the body and the mind. The speaker is an avid athlete who has been passionate about sports ever since he was a kid. He balanced his academic studies with his love for sports, and had great mentors and family members who supported them.
The speaker’s background was primarily in soccer, having coached and played it all the way through high school, college, and beyond. As an athlete, he was coached by his dad, played in the neighborhood, and focused on soccer after being cut from the basketball team in high school. He also had mentors in high school and college who shaped his coaching experience. After retiring from soccer, the speaker began coaching and speaking about it, and was happy with what they were doing. The conversation between the two focuses on the impact of being a multi-sport athlete and the coaching of that era. The speaker mentions how he was encouraged by his coach to try out for as many sports as possible and that he was the kid that wouldn’t come home until the street light came on. The speaker then goes on to talk about how this experience shaped him as a coach and a speaker. He believes that the combination of playing multiple sports and coaching at a young age has had the biggest impact on him. He also reflects on how this early leading edge of early sports specialization is something he and his colleagues now work against.
